India holds a special place in our hearts—not just as a travel destination but as a connection to our roots. Mom was born in Ludhiana and spent the first 19 years of her life there. As a family, we’ve been fortunate to visit India three times, retracing her steps and discovering new places along the way.
Our journeys have taken us across vibrant cities, historic landmarks, and breathtaking landscapes, each visit deepening our appreciation for India’s rich culture and history. From the spiritual and historical wonders of Amritsar to the royal grandeur of Jaipur, our adventures have been nothing short of magical.
Golden Beginnings in Punjab
Amritsar was often our starting point, a city that never fails to move us with its deep spiritual significance. The Golden Temple, shimmering in the sun, offered us peace and reflection. We also witnessed the electrifying Wagah Border ceremony, a patriotic display of military pageantry that left us in awe.
Ludhiana, Mom’s hometown, always held special nostalgia. Walking through its bustling streets, we imagined what life was like when she lived there. We’ve taken the train from Amritsar to Ludhiana, a journey filled with local chatter, scenic countryside views, and the timeless romance of Indian rail travel.
From Ludhiana, we explored Patiala, with its royal palaces, and Sangrur, a charming town rich in Punjabi heritage.
Through the Hills and the Heart of India
One of our most scenic train rides was from Kalka to Shimla, a UNESCO-listed toy train route that winds through lush hills and quaint tunnels. Shimla’s colonial charm, cool mountain air, and picturesque Mall Road made it a refreshing retreat.
Another memorable journey was from Kalka to Delhi, bringing us into the capital’s energetic embrace. In New Delhi, we marveled at India Gate, wandered through Humayun’s Tomb, and experienced the chaotic beauty of Chandni Chowk. From Delhi, we took a train to Agra, where the Taj Mahal left us speechless with its sheer beauty and timeless love story.
Royal Rajasthan and the Wild Wonders
Agra to Jaipur was another unforgettable train ride, transitioning from Mughal elegance to Rajasthani splendor. Jaipur’s Amer Fort, City Palace, and Hawa Mahal transported us to an era of grandeur and bravery.
Seeking a brush with the wild, we ventured to Ranthambore National Park, where we hoped to catch a glimpse of the elusive Bengal tiger. Though sightings are never guaranteed, the thrill of the safari and the park’s rugged beauty made it an adventure to remember.
Returning to Delhi from Jaipur marked the end of our rail journeys, each trip weaving together a tapestry of memories that connected us to Mom’s homeland in the most meaningful way.
Flying High and Looking Ahead
While we relished the romance of train travel, we also took to the skies, flying from Delhi to Amritsar and Delhi to Chandigarh, saving time and giving us new perspectives on India’s vast landscapes.
Every journey to India has been an enriching experience, blending nostalgia, discovery, and adventure. With every train ride, every city explored, and every family connection deepened, India continues to call us back, offering new stories to tell and memories to cherish.
Until our next journey, the vibrant sights, sounds, and flavors of India remain etched in our hearts.
